A number of custom made Android Jelly Bean ROMs have been released for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (check this installation guide for a CM10.1 ROM based on Android 4.2.1). However, amid all release of software upgrades, some users may also be searching for ways to root the Note 10.1, to allow for the ROMs to be installed in the first place.

XDA developer Chainfire has released CF-Auto-Root files for a number of Android-based devices, allowing for simple rooting; a key feature of this package is it includes stock recovery and has the SuperSU binary and APK already pre-installed.

"CF-Root is the root for 'rooting beginners' and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares and the quickest and easiest way for your first root," the developer explained, in a thread on the forum.

We also warn users to ensure compatibility of root package with specific model numbers and that incorrect installation may brick the device.

Pre-Requisites

  • Ensure appropriate USB drivers are downloaded and installed on computer and USB debugging mode is enabled
  • Ensure all data is backed-up
  • Ensure device is factory unlocked
  • Ensure battery has at least 80 percent charge

To Root Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8000/N8010/N8020)

  • Download CF-Auto-Root file for Galaxy Note 10.1 to computer and extract zip file (Download links: N8000, N8010, N8020 [for alternative links, click here])
  • Download Odin3 v1.85 and extract zip file
  • Switch device off and re-start in Download mode (to do so, press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power till warning message appears and then press Volume Down)
  • Start Odin and connect device to computer using USB cable (a successful connection is indicated by an ID:COM box turning yellow and a message - Added)
    • Note: If Odin does not detect device, ensure USB drivers are properly installed
  • In Odin, click PDA and select CF-Auto-Root file
    • Note: Do not make any other changes and ensure re-partition is unchecked
  • Click Start to begin installation
  • After installation, the device will automatically reboot and a message - Pass - will appear, indicating successful installation; unplug device after message appears
    • Note: If installation is unsuccessful (a message - Fail - appears) or Odin freezes, close the programme and unplug the device. Then remove and re-insert battery of device, re-start in Download mode and repeat this guide)

Once the device boots up successfully, it should be a rooted Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8000/N8010/N8020). To ensure the root method is installed and working properly, verify with the Root Checker app, which is available from the Play Store.
