Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been reported missing from her Arizona home under what authorities describe as concerning circumstances.

She was last seen Saturday evening at her residence in the Catalina Foothills, a neighbourhood north of Tucson. A family member called 911 around noon on Sunday to report her missing, NBC News confirmed.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos held a press conference late Sunday and told reporters the scene at her home caused 'grave concern'. He wouldn't elaborate on what investigators found, but confirmed homicide detectives had been brought in to process the scene. That's not standard for a missing persons case. Nanos said foul play hasn't been ruled out.

Massive Search Effort Underway

Authorities have deployed drones, an aeroplane, and a helicopter to search the area from above. On the ground, dog teams borrowed from Customs and Border Protection worked alongside volunteers through Sunday evening, KOLD reported. Crews with headlamps continued searching after dark while neighbours called out her name.

Nancy Guthrie has been classified as a 'vulnerable adult' because of her age and physical condition. According to the Arizona Daily Star, Nanos said she has mobility issues and other physical ailments, though her family reported no cognitive problems. Deputies have contacted local hospitals, but none have seen her.

Last Seen Saturday Night

Family members last saw Nancy Guthrie sometime between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Saturday at her home near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue. That left a gap of roughly 14 hours before anyone reported her missing.

She is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, about 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities don't know what clothing she was wearing.

Family Appeals For Information

In a statement released through an NBCUniversal spokesperson, the Guthrie family confirmed the situation and asked anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department at 520-351-4900. They thanked the public for prayers and support, ABC News reported.

Savannah Guthrie wasn't in Tucson on Sunday night, according to the sheriff. She grew up in an Arizona city and graduated from the University of Arizona. Over the years, she has spoken publicly about her close relationship with her mother, who has appeared on the Today Show several times.

When Nancy turned 80 in 2022, Savannah posted a tribute describing her mother as someone who always did the right thing, even when it was hard. She credited Nancy's selflessness and steady confidence as the reason her family turned out the way it did.

Savannah only returned to the Today Show studio on 26 January after undergoing vocal cord surgery earlier in the month. She had been off air for the first few weeks of 2026 while recovering. Whether she'll appear on Monday's broadcast isn't clear.

Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie's whereabouts should call 911 or contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
