A US woman plunged to her death from a tower block with her baby in her arms - and the child survived.

Cynthia Wachenheim, 44, wrote a seven page-long suicide note before jumping from the window of an eighth storey flat in New York.

Incredibly the baby, believed to be around 10 months old, survived because Wachenheim broke its fall on to the street below.

Bystanders found the baby lying face down on the body of Wachenheim in Bradhurst Avenue. Local sources claimed the baby is called Keston.

Resident Steven Dominguez, 18, saw the mother plummet to her death while he was walking to a nearby grocery shop with his mother.

He said: "I heard a scream like a yell. When I got closer I saw the baby crying. I was shocked; I could not believe it."

Dominguez claimed his mother went to pick up the baby but was prevented by an emergency worker from doing so.

Police searching the flat from which Wachenheim leapt found a window open, no sign of a struggle and a lengthy farewell note under the bed, it was reported.
