Tottenham and Liverpool have been given the chance to reconsider signing Toby Alderweireld after the defender admitted to being unhappy at Atletico Madrid.

Alderweireld made the move from boyhood club Ajax to Atletico in the summer with a number of sides interested in his services. But so far this season the 24 year old has featured just four times in La Liga and is becoming increasingly frustrated after having been an integral role to play at his former side.

The defender told reporters: "I miss Ajax, their style of play, my ex-teammates...At Atleti, I can't be happy if I'm not playing.

"The team is doing well and I continue to fight for my place, but I don't think it's my fault."

Atletico are currently second in the table and are equal on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona but with Alderweireld having little involvement he is clearly looking elsewhere particularly in the lead-up to the the summer's World Cup in Brazil.

The Belgium international revealed in September that Liverpool had made a bid for him but said he chose a move to Spain instead because Atletico put the effort in to convince him.

"The club have been following me now for two or three weeks, and you could see they really wanted me," he explained at the time. "That is why I turned down approaches from other teams. Liverpool, for example, appeared in the last few days, but I had already taken my decision."

Tottenham were also believed to be very interested in Alderweireld's signature but whether Spurs or Liverpool will come back in for the young star remains to be seen.

The Express has claimed that Napoli are also monitoring his situation with agent Soren Lerby entering into talks with the Serie A side over a possible move.
