Tottenham Plan Swoop for Striker and Defender as Levy Prepares January Splash – Report

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has been told that he will have a substantial amount of money to spend in January in a bid to strengthen their squad further, according to the Daily Mail.

Tottenham have made a significant splash this summer, spending close to £110m on players following the departure of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a record fee of £85m. However, their net spend including other departures stands at a puny £2m and chairman Daniel Levy is ready to brandish the chequebook if a player strikes the manager's fancy.

Spurs are in the market for a striker and a left-back with Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao top of their list to displace Danny Rose from the starting line-up. The England international has been in good form thus far but the manager is looking for more experience at the back.

Jermain Defoe is the backup striker for Tottenham this season behind Roberto Soldado but the north London club are looking for another addition to the squad to increase their attacking options with Defoe likely to make his way out of the club.

The new signings have had a positive impact on Tottenham's season thus far, with Tottenham currently in third position, joint in points with Arsenal in second. They have won three of their four games in the league thus far with their only loss coming in the North London Derby against the Gunners earlier this month.

However, in spite of all the talk about a new striker, AVB is happy with his options up front and stated the same following their 3-0 win over Tromso in the Europa League.

"JD is doing well. He and Soldado are competing and all of their performances have been excellent. There is not one single negative thing I can say about the performances of Soldado and JD," AVB said.

"At the moment we are playing with one striker up front and a number 10. We've scored 15 goals in seven games and conceded one, which are good numbers for us, so we haven't yet seen a reason to change to 4-4-2 but that is definitely an option for the future," he added,
