Patrick Mahomes' Dad Wants Parole Rules Changed for One Reason: To Watch His Son Play for Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes Sr. has asked a Texas judge to let him travel out of state so he can watch and support his son as he plays for the Kansas City Chiefs during the upcoming NFL season.

Mahomes Sr., 56, is currently on probation following his third driving while intoxicated charge. He has now filed a motion seeking permission to travel to Kansas City, Las Vegas and Cincinnati for Chiefs games during the upcoming season.

According to court documents, Mahomes Sr. remains subject to travel restrictions because of his probation. His latest request would allow him to temporarily leave Texas for the specific games while continuing to comply with the conditions imposed by the court.

Why Is Mahomes Sr. On Probation?

Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to his third DWI charge in August 2024 after his arrest earlier that year. He was sentenced to five years of probation, including one year of what was described as 'intense supervision.'

His case has continued to attract attention because of his relationship with his son, who has become one of the NFL's biggest stars with the Chiefs.

Mahomes Sr. acknowledged in his court filing that he would still be required to undergo urine testing before and after each trip if his request is approved. He has already completed 160 hours of community service and a 16-week outpatient treatment program as part of the conditions connected to his sentence.

He Wants To Watch Chiefs Games

Mahomes Sr.'s request is specifically linked to his son's NFL career. He is asking to travel from Texas to Kansas City, as well as Las Vegas and Cincinnati, for games involving the Chiefs.

The request could allow him to remain within the requirements of his probation while still being present for some of the biggest moments of the NFL season.

Mahomes Sr. previously played professional baseball and spent more than a decade in Major League Baseball before retiring in 2009. He has remained a familiar figure around his son's football career, frequently appearing at Chiefs games and publicly supporting the quarterback.

However, his ability to travel has become more complicated because of his probation conditions.

Previous Alcohol-Related Violation

The travel request comes after another legal setback earlier this year.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested in February 2026 and booked into the Smith County Jail after an alleged probation violation involving alcohol consumption. An ankle monitor reportedly recorded a high alcohol reading on 1 January. Subsequent urine tests conducted several days later were negative.

The incident renewed attention on his efforts to comply with the restrictions imposed after his third DWI conviction.

His son has previously spoken publicly about how his father's legal problems affected him. Patrick Mahomes said his father's actions had forced him to answer questions about the situation during an important period of his football career.

Mahomes Sr. also said it was embarrassing to know that his behavior had affected his son's life and apologized to him.

Court Will Decide Whether He Can Travel

Mahomes Sr.'s latest request now leaves the decision with the Texas court.

If granted, he would be able to travel to selected Chiefs games while remaining subject to probation requirements, including drug and alcohol testing around the trips.

For the Mahomes family, the request is about more than simply attending football games. It would allow the former MLB player to continue his role as a father supporting one of the NFL's biggest stars while navigating the restrictions imposed after his criminal conviction.

The court has yet to announce whether the request will be approved.
