Trump voter frustration

A Donald Trump voter who once feared the prospect of Kamala Harris winning the White House says he is struggling with health insurance costs and rising gas prices, expressing frustration with the president he trusted ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

John, from Pennsylvania, told SiriusXM's The Megyn Kelly Wrap-Up Show that his family was struggling to make ends meet despite his support for Trump in the 2024 election. Speaking to host Emily Jashinsky, he said he was 'angry' with the president, whom he still calls 'Big Daddy Trump'.

'I'm self-employed. My insurance, my health insurance, has turned into, now, like a huge mortgage payment with a huge deductible,' John said, describing the added expense of insuring his two teenage sons, who had recently started driving, before turning to another source of frustration. 'Gas prices are insane,' he said.

'I Trusted Trump 1,000%'

John said he backed Trump because he was 'horrified at the thought' of former Vice President Kamala Harris winning the 2024 presidential election. However, the financial pressures he described have left him questioning that support.

'But I got to tell you, I'm angry,' he said. 'I trusted Trump,' he added, explaining that he had supported the president completely and 'trusted him 1,000%.' John said he had worried about the cost of insurance before the election but now felt he was 'getting clobbered' by rising expenses. 'My wife also, she's self-employed. We're struggling,' he said, describing insurance costs as a major concern.'

John stopped short of saying he had switched political allegiance, telling Jashinsky that he was 'up in the air right now.' He also expressed reservations about the political alternatives, criticising what he described as 'blue-haired liberals and this weird nonsense.'

Despite those reservations, John said he was unhappy with how things had turned out. 'I don't want to say lied to, but I'm upset,' he said.

Fox News Poll Shows Sharp Drop in Approval

John's concerns come as a Fox News poll found Trump's overall job approval had fallen to its lowest level in the network's polling during either of his presidential terms. The poll, conducted from 9 to 12 October among 1,202 registered voters, found that 36% approved of Trump's performance as president, while 64% disapproved. The margin of error was 2.5 percentage points.

Trump's handling of inflation received even less support. Just 22% of respondents approved of his performance on the issue, down from 36% in a survey conducted last summer, according to Fox News.

The decline was particularly pronounced among voters under 45, those with annual household incomes below $50,000, non-white voters, and people without a college degree, according to the outlet. The findings come as the administration faces scrutiny over the cost of living, an issue that featured prominently in Trump's 2024 campaign.

Iran War Adds Pressure on Fuel Costs

The war with Iran has also added to pressure on US energy prices, with rising fuel costs becoming a concern for voters ahead of the midterm elections. At a 16 September rally in Gastonia, North Carolina, Trump described higher gas prices as 'a very inexpensive price to pay for what we've done' and predicted they would fall.

'But that's going to come tumbling down,' Trump said of gas prices. 'That's going to be like rocket ships in reverse.'

For voters such as John, however, the immediate concern is whether his family's household expenses will become more manageable. His account highlights the gap between his earlier confidence in Trump and his current frustration over the costs confronting his family.
