Fantasy horror fans rejoice! Kate Beckinsale is back as ass-kicking, leather-clad vampire Selene in the first official trailer for upcoming sequel Underworld: Blood Wars. Beckinsale isn't the only existing cast member reprising her role for movie number five: Divergent's Theo James is also stepping back into the shoes – or more accurately biker boots – of vampire warrior David after his character's introduction in previous instalment Underworld: Awakening.

Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) will also be reappearing as David's father and vampire elder, Thomas. Eagle-eyed GoT fans will also see more actors from the HBO series in the trailer, as Tobias Menzies brings to life new lycan leader and antagonist Marius, while James Faulkner appears in an unspecified role.

Sherlock's Lara Pulver can also be seen guzzling from a huge goblet of blood – as you do – so it's pretty safe to assume she'll be playing a vampire in the movie, although her role in the plot is still relatively unknown.

From other glimpses we can see of her in the sneak peak, it looks like she might be the new head of the coven, now that Selene has opted for a more rogue-like lifestyle, and simultaneously someone who enlists the help of the latter to take down their latest werewolf threat. Merlin's Bradley James can also be seen very briefly around the 1:28 mark.

It's safe to say the trailer is largely flashbacks of key moments in the franchise so far, including Michael Sheen's as lycan Lucian declaring eternal war on the vampires, Selene's epic 'shoot through the floor' moment in the first movie, and looks at her lover Michael (Scott Speedman) and their daughter Eve (India Eisley) while she explains that everyone she's ever cared about has been "hunted down". Cue Selene's motivation... but there are also some interesting points in the trailer to suggest that this might be Beckinsale's final outing when it comes to the Underworld movies.

In the video, someone can be heard saying "Selene's blood is the key", followed by Marius saying "you will be invincible" – which, combined with the idea that Selene might have to make "the ultimate sacrifice", according to IMDb suggests she might not make it until the end of this film. Not entirely as she is, anyway.

Interestingly, towards the end of the clip, Beckinsale can be seen with blonde hair and wearing a fur coat – a different look than her typically jet-black hair and leather trench coat. Could this hint at Selene becoming a lycan, or at least some type of other creature, in the film?

Directed by cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Anna Foerster (White House Down) and written by The Last Witch Hunter's Cory Goodman, based on characters originally drawn up by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman and Danny McBride, Underworld: Blood Wars is set to reach US cinemas on 6 January 2017 and UK screens on 3 February.
