US Winter Storm January 24 Update: Residents Warned to Stay Home as 12 States Face Dangerous Crippling Ice
US winter storm brings crippling ice; 12 states declare emergency.

Nearly half the United States population faces a severe threat this weekend as a massive weather system intensifies across the country. Authorities have issued various alerts, warnings and watches affecting approximately 140 million people, stretching from Arizona in the west all the way to Maine in the east.
Forecasters describe the approaching system as life-threatening, urging millions to prepare for hazardous conditions that could bring daily life to a standstill.
A Massive Storm Is About to Bring Heavy Snow and Ice
This upcoming mess is happening because two very different weather systems are crashing into each other. An area of low pressure is currently surging upwards from the Gulf of Mexico, carrying substantial moisture, where it is set to meet a plunge of extremely cold Arctic air descending from Canada. This interaction is the primary driver behind the significant, long-duration winter storm predicted to lash the nation from Friday through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this system will unleash widespread heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies to New England. The forecast is particularly dire for a corridor stretching from Texas through parts of the South, where a crippling ice storm is expected to develop.
An ice storm is officially defined by the accumulation of at least a quarter of an inch of ice on exposed surfaces. This level of accumulation is sufficient to snap tree branches, down power lines and turn roads into impassable skating rinks.
While the South contends with ice, other regions prepare for heavy snowfall. Areas from Oklahoma through to Washington DC, New York and Boston could see accumulations of around 30 cm (12 ins). Following the precipitation, a 'final punch' of bitterly cold air will sweep in. This polar plunge could drive wind chill temperatures down to a staggering -46°C (-50°F) in parts of North Dakota and Minnesota.
Catastrophic Conditions Rivalling Hurricane Damage
The potential impact of this system cannot be overstated. Forecasters warn that the damage in areas hardest hit by heavy snow and ice could rival that of a hurricane. The NWS stated that the storm will cause 'significant to locally catastrophic ice accumulations with the potential for long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions.'
In response to the looming danger, 12 states have already declared states of emergency. The list includes Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri. The disruption to travel has been immediate and severe, with more than 8,000 flights cancelled across the US this weekend alone.
Federal Agencies Mobilise Massive Relief Resources
The federal response is already underway to mitigate the storm's impact. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has activated its National Response Coordination Centre and is pre-positioning critical supplies. According to documents obtained by Sky News, the agency is deploying over 200 call centre specialists to assist with the anticipated surge in emergency requests.
Material support includes 250,000 meals, 400,000 litres of water and 30 generators stationed at Camp Minden in Louisiana. To ensure these commodities can be moved quickly to where they are needed most, FEMA has deployed dozens of shuttle drivers to distribution centres.
Specifically, 24 drivers are stationed in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, 12 in Fort Worth, Texas, and 22 in Atlanta. Additionally, 28 search and rescue teams have been placed on standby, ready to deploy at a moment's notice.

Crucial Advice For Surviving The Freeze
Residents in the affected path are strongly advised to stay at home and avoid all travel. Emergency management officials emphasise the importance of preparation. 'Items like flashlights, batteries, and battery back-ups can make all the difference,' noted the North Carolina Department of Emergency Management. Households should also stock emergency kits with mobile phone chargers, radios, blankets, first-aid supplies and winter clothing.
Safety regarding heating sources is paramount. Officials warned that people should never run a generator inside a home or garage due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency also urged residents to check in on neighbours and family members, keep generators at least 20 ft from homes and exercise extreme caution while shovelling snow.
