Victor Wembanyama has drawn criticism from some NBA fans after speaking out against players who promote sports betting and prediction market companies.

The San Antonio Spurs star made his position clear on Thursday when reporters asked whether he would consider signing a deal with a sports gambling company as the industry continues to expand its presence around professional sport.

'Absolutely not,' Wembanyama said after a training camp practice. 'I will never do that.'

He added: 'Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.'

The comments came as several high-profile NBA players have established commercial relationships with companies operating in the sports betting or prediction market space.

Four-time NBA champion LeBron James, who previously endorsed digital sports gambling company DraftKings, recently signed with prediction market platform Polymarket. Kevin Durant is a brand ambassador for FanDuel, while Giannis Antetokounmpo has been involved with prediction market platform Kalshi as a shareholder and marketing partner.

Wembanyama Says He Wants Partnerships That Inspire

Wembanyama's stance appears to form part of a broader approach to the commercial partnerships he chooses.

The 22-year-old has become one of basketball's biggest young stars since being selected first overall by the Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft. He has also built a growing portfolio of endorsements outside basketball, including a role as a brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton.

He has reportedly also agreed to a memorabilia partnership with Fanatics.

Rather than pursuing every available commercial opportunity, Wembanyama said he now wants to work with brands that align with the image he hopes to project.

He said his current approach to partnerships is centred on 'inspiring' others.

That philosophy appears to explain why he has drawn a distinction between betting-related endorsements and other commercial deals. His comments, however, quickly became a talking point among NBA fans on social media.

Fans Question Wembanyama's Comments

While some supporters praised Wembanyama for refusing to associate himself with sports gambling companies, others accused him of hypocrisy.

One fan wrote: 'Only saying this for PR we all know he really dont give a f***.'

Another referenced Wembanyama's confrontation with Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid during the playoffs, writing: 'Same dude who elbowed Naz Reid in the face during the playoffs.'

A third critic focused on Wembanyama's conduct during San Antonio's playoff run, writing: 'Oh stop it... a lot of people lost respect for Wemby and his "character" during their playoff run. Absolutely despicable attitude of a sore loser. You wanna set a good example Wemby! Learn to control your competitve emotions rather than letting them control you. A lot to learn.'

Those comments represent individual reactions from fans rather than established findings about Wembanyama's motives or character.

NBA players are permitted to enter certain commercial partnerships involving betting operators and prediction markets, although league rules restrict players from promoting gambling involving NBA games. The distinction has become increasingly relevant as sports betting and prediction markets have expanded their relationships with professional athletes.

Wembanyama's comments therefore place him apart from several of his peers who have embraced opportunities in the rapidly growing sector.
