Shaq's New FBI Honour Sparks Jersey Burning as NBA Legend Hits Back at Fan: 'Broke Boy'

Shaquille O'Neal has been named an honorary FBI Special Agent, prompting military veteran and social-media creator Matthew Chappelle to burn a vintage Orlando Magic jersey in protest.

The designation was presented by FBI Director Kash Patel during the FBI National Academy's Session 299 graduation in Quantico, Virginia, on 17 September. Patel described O'Neal as 'one of the best supporters of law enforcement in the country', while the designation itself was honorary and did not make him a sworn FBI special agent or give him investigative authority.

Chappelle, who posts on social media as 'OG Matt', said his objection centred on O'Neal accepting the recognition from Patel. He filmed himself throwing a No. 32 O'Neal Magic jersey into a bin and setting it alight. O'Neal later responded in a private Instagram message, writing: 'I hear you broke boy. Have a great time in your apt with your family.'

O'Neal Receives Honorary FBI Title

Patel announced O'Neal's honorary title while congratulating the 265 law-enforcement officials who completed Session 299 of the FBI National Academy.

He said O'Neal had 'graduated with this session and became an honorary FBI Special Agent'. The designation did not confer the powers or status of a sworn FBI agent.

The FBI National Academy is a 10-week professional development programme for experienced law-enforcement officers and leaders. Its training covers areas including leadership, academics, physical fitness and professional development, and is separate from the programme for newly recruited FBI special agents.

O'Neal's links to law enforcement predate the recognition. He has served in reserve police roles in several US jurisdictions, including Miami Beach and Los Angeles, and has previously held an honorary Deputy US Marshal designation.

Chappelle posted his video on Instagram on 18 September, one day after Patel announced the honour. The footage showed O'Neal receiving the recognition before Chappelle went to his wardrobe, took out the vintage No. 32 jersey and threw it into a bin.

He then set the shirt alight.

Reporting on the video said Chappelle's criticism was focused on O'Neal accepting the recognition from Patel, with his comments distinguishing that objection from O'Neal's longstanding involvement with law enforcement.

Basketball Network reported that Chappelle had previously viewed O'Neal differently but said accepting the honour from Patel changed his position. The video became the starting point for the public exchange between the two.

O'Neal Calls Critic 'Broke Boy'

O'Neal subsequently contacted Chappelle through Instagram direct messages.

According to screenshots reported by Basketball Network and Yahoo Sports, O'Neal wrote: 'I hear you broke boy. Have a great time in your apt with your family.'

Chappelle then responded publicly, objecting to the reference to his living situation and continuing to criticise O'Neal's decision to accept the FBI honour.

O'Neal later posted an AI-generated rap video aimed at critics of the recognition, according to social-media coverage of the exchange. The post generated further discussion about the dispute, which had begun with Chappelle's jersey-burning protest.

The exchange has centred on O'Neal's decision to accept the honorary FBI title from Patel and his subsequent response to one of its critics.
