Donald Trump's famous locks were left looking messier than usual after he allowed talk show host Jimmy Fallon to ruffle his hair.

The GOP nominee appeared on The Tonight Show on 15 September, and was asked about the latest US election polls and how he had felt campaigning, before Fallon went to on to discuss Trump's hair.

"Next time I see you, you could be the president of the United States," Fallon told Trump. "I just want to know if there's something we could do that's not presidential really, there's something we could do now that we're both civilians.

"Can I mess your hair up?" Fallon asked Trump, to loud cheers from the audience. "I'll be gentle."

Trump surprisingly put up no fight, allowing Fallon to ruffle his hair, which Fallon did with much gusto. Trump joked he hoped the people he was addressing in New Hampshire would understand his messier look.

But while Trump joined in the joke, Fallon faced a backlash for his amiable interview, with several people on social media suggesting he had gone too easy on the outspoken presidential hopeful.

One person wrote: "I don't fault Jimmy Fallon for not being a journalist. I do fault him for his willingness to serve as hell's court jester." Another added: "Was Jimmy Fallon supposed to do a hard-hitting interview? Of course not. Was he supposed to shower a racist with love? No. Not that, either."

Fallon largely avoided serious topics, hitting Trump with several impersonations of himself, before thanking him for "giving us the material" by saying shocking things.

He hit on the topic of Trump's praise of Russian president Vladimir Putin, whom Trump insisted he didn't know but thought it would be a good idea if the US "got on with Russia".
