Emma West, the passenger who featured in the viral video My Tram Experience, was remanded in custody until the New Yea,r after appearing at Croydon Magistrates' Court charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.

West, 34, sobbed as the magistrates watched the now infamous footage which has been viewed over 11 million times online.

West of New Addington has refused to plead and will be tried in front of a jury at a Crown Court. She is due back at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Jan 3.

West's solicitor David Ewings made a bail application but it was denied by the magistrate Ian McNeal for her own safety.

Earlier, an administrative error led to the defendant entering a not guilty plea, but the court file was later amended to show she has not yet pleaded.
