British Journalist 'Terrified' as Police Forcefully Raided His Cardiff Home Over China Spy Allegations

A senior Welsh journalist has spoken of his shock as his Cardiff home was raided by counterterrorism police on the afternoon of Wednesday, 4 March. The search was a part of the police probe into allegations that the journalist is among individuals who have been spying for China.

Nation.Cymru news website's Associate Editor Martin Shipton told BBC Wales he was perplexed about his involvement in the case, and confirmed the police had entered his house in Cardiff forcibly after he was served with a search warrant under the National Security Act 2023. Shipton, however, was not arrested following the raid.

'Terrifying' Dawn Raid

Shipton told BBC Wales that he had given a voluntary statement to the police, insisting he had not done anything wrong. He said he had no connection with the Chinese government and had never received financial support from it. Shipton also stated he understood that the search was in relation to his connections with David Taylor.

With the Counter-terror police in Wales and in Scotland, the Metropolitan Police arrested three individuals who were connected with Wales and the Labour Party in connection with the investigation. They were released on bail on Thursday, per BBC. 39-year-old David Taylor was among these individuals.

Taylor, a former adviser to the Wales Office, was detained on suspicion of spying for the Chinese. He is married to Labour MP Joani Reid.

Following this, Reid issued a statement that said, 'I have never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law. I am not part of my husband's business activities and neither I nor my children are part of this investigation.'

Reid is currently the MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven.

Labour Party Figures & Associates Questioned as Investigation Continues

Among the arrested individuals are former Welsh government special adviser Steve Jones and former Labour press officer and ex Reform member Matthew Aplin. The three were released on bail until May pending investigation.

Shipton confirmed that he and Taylor shared years of friendship. According to the Met Police, searches were conducted at the homes of the three men who were arrested, and a car was also examined and photographed on Pontyclun Rhondda Cynon Taf. Two other addresses in London and East Kilbride in Scotland were also searched.

Eluned Morgan, First Minister of Wales, said in a statement, 'There's a live investigation ongoing at the moment and obviously that means I can't comment. I don't want to compromise this investigation, it's something we should take very seriously.'

Morgan also said he is mindful of this particular issue, but that he was not able to give further comments. 'It's an issue I'm concerned about but I can't comment any further,' Morgan said.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the probe has unsettled the Labour Party, coinciding with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's efforts to engage with Beijing while fending off criticism of a soft stance on China.

Dan Jarvis, Security Minister, said to the House of Commons on Wednesday that the probe involved 'foreign interference targeting UK democracy,' and confirmed that UK officials had formally raised the issue with Chinese authorities in London and Beijing.
