Who Is Maxim Naumov? The 24-Year-Old Skater Turning an Unthinkable Tragedy into an Olympic Tribute
Performing to Chopin, the 24-year-old found a rare sense of peace as he fulfilled a lifelong family dream

Maxim Naumov carries a legacy that transcends the ice every time he competes on the Olympic stage. While the world watches his technical skill, few truly understand the heavy history behind his performance. It is a heartfelt homage to his parents, whose lives were tragically cut short in a devastating midair collision.
Tuesday, 10 February 2026, marked the moment the 24-year-old Team USA figure skater stepped onto Olympic ice in Milan, Italy, for his maiden appearance. This career milestone at the Milano Ice Skating Arena occurred on the first anniversary of the horrific aviation accident that killed both his mother and father.
A Composed Performance on the Ice
Displaying remarkable heart and steady control, Maxim navigated his men's short program routine with grace. Once his routine finished, a gentle smile appeared, marking a moment of reflection rather than an outward display of triumph. While he earned a score of 85.65, the figures on the board mattered less to the audience than the spirit of his skate.
While awaiting his results, Maxim displayed a photograph of himself alongside his mother and father. This gesture, caught on both the spectators' and the television cameras' lenses, served as his personal affirmation that they remained by his side in that moment. Earlier, the arena screens showed a brief clip in which Maxim looked into the camera and offered a gentle dedication: 'Mom and dad, this one is for you.'
Maxim chose Frédéric Chopin's 'Nocturne No. 20' for his routine, gliding across the ice with a blend of fluid movement and sharp concentration. Reflecting on the experience afterwards, he described sensing his mother and father throughout the performance. He noted that while pre-competition nerves usually affect him, a rare sense of peace stayed with him this time.
A Final Salute to His Parents
The moment his music went silent, he fell to his knees and cast his gaze toward the rafters in a silent tribute to his mother and father. Later, he reflected on the rush of feelings, saying, 'I didn't know if I was going to cry, smile or laugh, and all I could do was look up at them. And man, I still can't believe what just happened. I think it's going to take me a few hours or maybe a few weeks to know.'
According to the AP, Naumov described the atmosphere from the start, stating, 'From the time that my name was announced in the warmup to right before the skate. I felt it - just the crowd, the energy, the roar. It's like a buzz, you know? In your body. I couldn't help but just embrace it. Embrace that love.'
A Legacy of Excellence and Support
Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, his parents, were seasoned Olympic figure skaters, having competed at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Games. Beyond their professional history on the ice, they served as his mentors and provided him with unwavering encouragement throughout his career.
The lives of his parents were cut short in January 2025 following a mid-air accident above the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. As passengers on American Eagle Flight 5342, they were involved in a collision with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter while flying home from the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. This tragedy took more than 60 lives, including 14 individuals from the world of figure skating.
Maxim Naumov had departed from Wichita prior to the accident. During a March 2025 appearance on Today, his first interview following the tragedy, he revealed the final sentiment his mother shared with him. 'Hey, I just want you to know that we love you and we're proud of you,' she had said.
As he competes in Milan, Maxim is fulfilling the aspirations he once shared with his mother and father. After earning his place on the squad in January 2026, he explained to an NBC Sports presenter, 'It means so much in our family, and it's what I've been thinking about since I've been 5 years old, before I even knew how to think or what to think.'
When considering how his parents would view his success, Maxim suggested, 'They'd say, "We're proud of you, but [the] job's not finished. We're just getting started."'
Resilience Through an Unthinkable Year
The U.S. government indicated in December 2025 that errors by air traffic control and helicopter flight crews were likely factors in the collision, a statement made during a lawsuit brought by a grieving family.
Marking one year since the loss, Maxim Naumov posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, calling it the hardest period of his life. Despite the endless search for answers, he continues to move forward daily. He remains dedicated to the dream they built together in his childhood, finally seeing that shared vision realised at the Olympics.
