Xbox officially rolled out its Disc to Digital programme to all players on Wednesday, 30 September, letting owners of eligible physical games claim a digital licence at no extra cost.

Once claimed, players can download and play the digital version without repeatedly inserting the disc. However, the digital entitlement remains tied to the physical copy.

The digital licence remains tied to the qualifying disc, and Microsoft says access may be limited or revoked if the player loses, sells, or gives away the disc.

The move gives players access to Xbox's digital features while retaining their physical discs, creating a notable contrast with Sony's plans to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in 2028.

Xbox Bridges Physical and Digital Libraries

The Disc to Digital programme began testing with Xbox Insiders on August 31, initially supporting thousands of titles, Xbox said. It began with over a thousand supported titles, but Xbox said it would continue adding more over time.

With the programme, players can insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into their console and launch the game to claim the digital entitlement.

When they launch the game, players will get a digital license, allowing them to play without inserting the disc. Supported titles can also benefit from Xbox features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where those services are available.

Microsoft also said that availability can depend on factors including technical considerations, licensing, publishing rights, and manufacturing, with eligibility potentially changing over time. Meanwhile, if the disc is sold, given away or otherwise no longer possessed, access to the associated digital licence may be limited or revoked.

When the feature was initially announced, Xbox VP Jason Ronald stated, 'Even as technology changes or formats change, your library shouldn't. 'We want to be able to bring that forward,' he added. 'And that's really about our commitment to game preservation.'

Sony Is Taking a Different Route

The Xbox update comes as Sony prepares to significantly reduce the role of physical media on PlayStation.

Sony announced in July that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles from January 2028. From then on, new releases will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store or as digital formats sold by retailers.

The announcement does not affect games already released on disc, or titles released in physical form before the January 2028 deadline. Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer preferences and the broader shift from physical discs towards digital distribution.

Two Different Approaches to the Disc Era

For console users, the key difference lies in how each company is handling games already tied to physical media. Xbox's system applies to qualifying discs that players already own, while Sony's announced change concerns the production of physical copies for new PlayStation releases from 2028.

Neither policy removes existing physical games from players' libraries. Instead, the changes affect how players can use physical copies alongside digital licences and how new games will be distributed in the coming years.
