Xbox Game Pass is facing growing affordability concerns as more subscribers cite cost as a reason for cancelling Xbox Instagram Account

Xbox Game Pass and other major console subscriptions are facing growing affordability concerns, with new survey data showing cost is becoming a bigger reason why US gamers decide to walk away, even when they still like the service.

Circana's latest consumer research found that 40% of people who recently cancelled Xbox Game Pass Essential cited cost as a primary reason, up from 37% in the first quarter of 2026. PlayStation Plus Essential recorded the same increase, while Nintendo Switch Online saw an even sharper rise.

Xbox Game Pass Subscription Cancellations Explained

The figures do not mean that 40% of Xbox Game Pass subscribers have cancelled their memberships.

Circana senior director and video game analyst Mat Piscatella stressed that the findings concern the reasons given by people who have already cancelled, rather than the overall number of customers abandoning gaming subscriptions.

The survey found that 40% of recent Xbox Game Pass Essential cancellers said they could not justify the subscription cost within their budget despite liking the service. That proportion stood at 37% in Q1.

Piscatella said the data has 'no relation to the number of people canceling,' making the distinction important when assessing the state of Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.

Nintendo Switch Online Faces Greater Cost Pressure

Cost concerns extend beyond Microsoft's gaming service.

Half of recent Nintendo Switch Online cancellers said they liked the service but could no longer justify its cost within their budget, according to the Circana data. That was up from 40% earlier in the year.

PlayStation Plus Essential, meanwhile, matched Xbox Game Pass Essential at 40%, up from 37% during the first quarter.

The findings suggest affordability is becoming a more prominent reason for cancellation across all three major console subscription ecosystems rather than being an Xbox-only issue.

Is Xbox Game Pass Still Worth the Cost?

Microsoft has already made major changes to Game Pass pricing and benefits in 2026.

In April, Xbox cut the US price of Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 (£22) to $22.99 (£17) per month, while PC Game Pass fell from $16.49 (£12) to $13.99 (£10). Prices vary by region.

However, the company also confirmed that future Call of Duty titles would no longer arrive on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. Instead, new instalments are expected to join during the following holiday season.

Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma acknowledged at the time that Game Pass Ultimate had 'become too expensive for too many players.'

Xbox Cloud Gaming Limits Add Another Change

Microsoft is also preparing to restrict the amount of Xbox Cloud Gaming included with Game Pass.

From November, Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 cloud gaming hours per month, Premium will offer 10 hours and Essential will provide five. Players exceeding their allowance will be able to purchase additional cloud gaming time through the Xbox Store.

Xbox said it expects the limits to affect around 4% of Game Pass subscribers based on current usage.

The company has separately experimented with ad-supported cloud gaming as it explores cheaper ways for people to access games. These moves come as Microsoft tries to balance the rising costs of operating cloud services with keeping gaming affordable.

Circana's findings do not establish that Microsoft's recent Game Pass changes caused subscribers to cancel. Instead, they show that among those already leaving Xbox Game Pass Essential and rival services, fitting another subscription into the monthly budget is increasingly becoming the deciding factor.
