PS6 Release Date Delayed? Former Playstation Boss Recommends Holding off Due To Surging Hardware Costs

Any PS6 release date remains unconfirmed, but former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida says Sony should keep the current console generation running longer. His comments came during a 28 September episode of The Vergecast, where he linked next-generation timing to rising hardware costs. Sony has not announced a product called PlayStation 6 or set a launch window.

The news came after Sony Group said higher memory prices were increasing manufacturing costs and could affect console adoption if passed on to buyers. The company also said it had made no decision on the timing or pricing of its next-generation platform.

PS6 Debate Grows as Yoshida Backs a Longer PS5 Era

Yoshida spent 31 years with PlayStation before leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment on 15 January 2025. He previously served as president of SIE Worldwide Studios and later led PlayStation's initiative supporting independent developers.

Speaking on The Vergecast, Yoshida said console makers may be considering whether higher costs justify waiting longer before moving to new hardware.

'Because of the cost of goods, they might be looking, pushing back the launch of next gen,' he said.

He added that Sony and Nintendo should keep their current generations going while players remain satisfied with the PS5 and Switch 2.

'I think they should try to keep the current generation as long as possible because I think people are very happy using PS5 and Switch 2.'

Yoshida also pointed to pressure on household budgets and the rising price of components used in gaming hardware.

'People have finite budgets and it feels like PC and consoles, the components very specific to these devices have increased the price way more than all the other forms of entertainment.'

His remarks do not confirm that Sony has delayed anything. Yoshida left SIE in 2025 and was offering an outside view rather than announcing company plans.

Unconfirmed reports and hardware leaks have pointed to a possible 2027 release window. Sony has not confirmed that timing.

Sony Has Not Set a PS6 Launch Date or Price

Sony Group President and CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed next-generation hardware during the company's 8 May earnings presentation.

Sony's official Q&A said no decisions had been made about launch timing or pricing. The company also said higher memory prices were raising manufacturing and component costs.

Sony said memory prices were expected to remain elevated and supply-demand conditions tight through 2027. It said several responses were being considered, including lowering costs elsewhere and adjusting sales strategies.

Those comments support Yoshida's concern about affordability, but they do not establish that a PS6 delay is planned.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Hideaki Nishino discussed the company's future console strategy in June 2025. He said the future of PlayStation was 'top of mind,' without giving details about next-generation hardware.

Sony's public position remains limited. It is considering next-generation plans while monitoring costs, but no PS6 launch date or price has been announced.

PS6 Questions Build Alongside Physical Disc Criticism

The discussion around Sony's next hardware generation comes as the company faces criticism over changes to physical PlayStation games.

On 1 July, SIE announced that physical disc production would end for all new PlayStation games released from January 2028. Games released before that date will not be affected.

New games released from January 2028 will instead be sold digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers.

Sony later addressed opposition during its 31 July earnings Q&A. The company said the move reflected the broader shift towards digital content and that it would continue considering player preferences and expectations.

Online reaction has been divided. Reddit discussions included criticism from players concerned about physical ownership, resale and game sharing. Others argued that digital purchasing already dominates the market.

Moore's Law Is Dead has separately claimed Sony surveyed developers about physical game distribution. Sony has not confirmed that claim, and it does not establish a planned policy reversal.

Yoshida's comments add a former PlayStation executive's perspective to an uncertain transition. They do not show that Sony has delayed the PS6.
