Amen Thompson's five-year, $208 million extension with the Houston Rockets not only locks in the 23-year-old as a franchise cornerstone from 2027, it is structured to give Houston an additional $44 million in flexibility to keep building the roster around him, even with a 10 per cent trade kicker baked into the deal.

The contract, which begins in 2027, follows Thompson's most impressive NBA campaign to date, in which he averaged career highs of 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals while leading the league in minutes played.

The money is significant, but so is what Houston is betting on. Thompson remains an imperfect offensive player, particularly from three-point range, yet his athleticism, defensive versatility and rapid development have convinced the Rockets that his ceiling could be far higher than his current numbers suggest.

Rockets Make Long-Term Commitment

Houston's decision reflects its belief that Thompson can develop into one of the NBA's leading two-way players.

The fourth overall selection in the 2023 NBA Draft, Thompson has steadily expanded his role since arriving in Houston. His athleticism, defensive versatility and ability to attack the basket have made him one of the most intriguing young players in the league.

His latest season provided the clearest evidence yet of his potential. Thompson averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 2025-26, all career highs.

He also led the entire NBA in minutes played, underlining how heavily Houston relied on him. He appeared in 210 games during his first three NBA seasons, starting 144 of them, while averaging 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds for his career.

Shooting Remains the Biggest Question

Despite his rapid development, Thompson's new contract comes with an obvious area for improvement. His outside shooting remains inconsistent.

He shot only around 22 per cent from three-point range last season, leaving opponents with an opportunity to sag off him and challenge his ability to create space in the half-court.

That limitation makes his development over the next several seasons particularly important. Thompson has already demonstrated that he can affect games without being an elite perimeter shooter.

His size and explosiveness allow him to finish around the rim, while his defensive ability gives Houston another player capable of guarding multiple positions. His role also expanded last season as injuries forced him into greater point guard responsibilities.

Houston Backs Its Young Core

The extension further cements the Rockets' commitment to building around their young talent. Thompson joins Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr and Tari Eason as key members of Houston's core who are under long-term contracts.

The franchise has now committed substantial money to a group it hopes can eventually compete for the Western Conference and NBA titles.

The Rockets also have veteran superstar Kevin Durant on the roster, adding another major piece as the younger players continue developing. For Thompson, however, the new contract marks a decisive moment.

Houston is committing $208 million in the belief that his best basketball is still ahead of him. After three seasons of steady progress, the franchise is now expecting him to move from promising young defender to genuine star.

If his offensive game catches up with his physical and defensive attributes, the deal could eventually look like one of the Rockets' smartest investments.
