Russia Interfered in Brexit Vote, Claims Andy Burnham as Nigel Farage Brands Him a 'Liar'
Burnham's claim has reignited debate over Russian interference and the 2016 referendum

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum, prompting Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to call him a 'liar.' Burnham made the claim on The Rest Is Politics podcast after saying he had asked security officials about Moscow's involvement when he entered Downing Street in July.
Burnham said he had received a clear answer that interference had occurred, but did not identify who gave him the assessment or explain the evidence behind it. The government has maintained that Russian attempts to interfere were unsuccessful and that the referendum result remains legitimate.
The dispute has renewed scrutiny of the handling of possible Russian interference in the vote, in which 51.9 per cent of voters backed leaving the European Union. No publicly disclosed evidence has established that Russia changed the result.
Government Says Result Remains Legitimate
Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty sought to clarify the government's position after the interview. Speaking to Sky News, he said Russia had attempted to interfere in the referendum but had not succeeded. Asked whether the activity had changed the result, he replied: 'They haven't succeeded.'
Downing Street also said it was 'inconceivable' that Russia had not tried to use the referendum to its advantage, but maintained that the attempts had failed.
Farage has called the Prime Minister “a liar” and relies on Boris Johnson to do it!

I’m sure UK news shows will tonight be calling Farages boll**** out but just in case let’s make sure people get the actual FACTS https://t.co/Y3OlFFJtW4
Farage rejected Burnham's claim, saying: 'The prime minister is a liar, yes, a liar.' He described the allegations as a 'hoax' and accused Burnham of making false claims about Russian involvement.
Former prime minister Boris Johnson has also disputed claims of successful Russian interference. Following Burnham's latest comments, Johnson said he had asked security services the same question when he became foreign secretary and was told there was no evidence of successful interference by Russia or any other power.
This is just not true. As soon as I became foreign secretary I asked the security services the same question and they replied that there was no evidence of any successful interference in the 2016 referendum, by Russia or any other power.

What the 2020 Russia Report Found
Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee examined alleged Russian activity in its 2020 Russia report. The committee criticised the government for failing to commission a full assessment of possible interference in the referendum, leaving the extent of any activity unresolved.
The report did not establish that Russia changed the result. In a written answer to Parliament in August 2020, the government said it had seen 'no evidence of successful interference' in the referendum.

The committee also found that Russia had sought to influence Scotland's 2014 independence referendum, in which voters rejected independence. That finding added to concerns about foreign interference in British democratic processes, but does not prove that Russia determined the outcome of the Brexit vote.
Burnham Wants European Voters To Be Alert
Burnham said he raised the issue to help voters in other European democracies recognise attempts by foreign powers to disrupt political debate. He specifically mentioned France and Germany, arguing that the public should be better informed about Russian influence.
He said the UK had been 'too much on the back foot' in explaining attempts to disrupt its political processes from overseas.
Russia has previously denied interfering in the Brexit referendum. The Russian embassy in London has not released any comments on the latest claim.
The central question remains what evidence Burnham was given and what form the alleged interference took. Until further details are made public, the distinction between attempts to influence the referendum and any demonstrable effect on its outcome remains crucial to the dispute.
