A female Australian jockey died after falling from a horse during a race at the Darwin Cup meeting on Monday (August 05), the Darwin Turf Club said.

Simone Montgomerie was riding Riahgrand during the sixth race of the day when she fell and was trampled.

"Simone fell and sustained traumatic injuries during that fall. She was transported from the race track to Royal Darwin Hospital with St John ambulance, that was immediately on the scene. Attending to her during that transport were two doctors and those two doctors were assisted by paramedics. It's with great regret that we were advised by the family that Simone passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital," Brett Dixon, Chairman of the Darwin Turf Club, told reporters at a news conference.

"The Darwin Turf Club, along with the entire industry, offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Ms Montgomerie. And can I just add to that, that Simone, as far as theDarwin Turf Club was concerned, she was our family and we're all devastated by the accident," he said.

He said the club, along with Thoroughbred Racing Northern Territory (TRNT) stewards and riders, decided to abandon the rest of the meeting, including the feature race the Darwin Cup.

Around 20,000 race-goers were at the meeting, according to local media.
