Overview

Hosts Brazil's disappointing run in the hockey tournament of the Rio 2016 Olympics continued, when they were thrashed 12-nil by a dominant Belgium side in their last game. This result comes after their 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Spain in the opening encounter.

The lowest ranked team in the tournament, the hosts have struggled both in attack and defence, with their performances leading to question marks over the quality of the teams present at Rio currently. Striker Matheus Borges and defender Stephane Vehrle-Smith who were named in the 2015 Pan American Elite teams were expected to lead from the front, but have gone missing in the big games.

Brazil winning against Great Britain looks unlikely considering the gulf in talent between the two teams.

Their opponents Great Britain too have had a disappointing start to the tournament and are currently searching for their first win at Rio. Ranked fourth in the world, the Three Lions come into this clash on the back of a 2-2 draw to New Zealand.

Head coach Bobby Crutchley lamented the finishing especially from their forwards against Belgium, which could have turned the game in their favour. They need to finish in the top four of their group to qualify for the quarter-final, and will know that they will need a positive result in their last three games.
