Wigan Athletic's Callum McManaman has been rewarded for his man-of-the-match display in the FA Cup final with a place in the England Under-21 squad for the summer's European Championship in Israel.

McManaman starred at Wembley as Wigan beat Manchester City and the uncapped Merseyside born winger takes his place in the squad alongside Luke Shaw, who is also still to feature for the Under-21's.

Liverpool's Raheem Sterling is omitted due to injury while Arsenal full-back Carl Jenkinson is also left out. Connor Wickham is the only out-and-out striker selected, with Wilfried Zaha expected to play a central role in attack.

Callum McManaman
McManaman's performance in the FA Cup final has earned him a call-up to the Under-21 squad.

"I've made it my business over the last six weeks to have a real good look at Callum," Pearce said upon confirming his 23-man squad. "I think he's finding his confidence now, he's been nurtured very well by Wigan.

"He's played so well and the culmination of that was a fantastic game in The Final. That will give his self-esteem the world of good.

"We're pleased with his development and that happens with players. He came on the international scene a few years ago at U20 level, now he's found form at the right time, just before a major championship.

"I've seen fit to take him, even though he's not played Under-21 football.

"Raheem's had a thigh problem that he's been nursing for some time, and he's not played for Liverpool for the last six or seven weeks. It's a real disappointment because his form for the Under-21s of late has been outstanding.

"But if they're not fit, I can't pick them."

After a group stage exit at Euro 2011 in Denmark, England will seek to improve their fortunes in a group stage which sees them face Italy, Norway and hosts Israel with the top two sides qualifying for the semi-final.
