Fans Joke Unrecognisable Clay Matthews Got Surgery 'To Look Like The Gigachad Meme' Amid Disputed Images

Former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews is at the centre of plastic surgery rumours after disputed images circulated online showing him with a dramatically altered face.

The photos were posted by TMZ on its social media accounts with an '#ad' label, and an X Community Note attached to the post alleged the images were AI-generated and falsely depicted Matthews after cosmetic work.

No credible source including Matthews, his representatives or a medical provider has confirmed that he underwent any procedure.

The Viral Claim and Why It Remains Unverified

The images, shared on TMZ's X account rather than as a conventional article on its main site, appeared to show Matthews grocery shopping with a noticeably different jawline and facial structure.

That sparked immediate speculation, with one X user writing, 'Clay Matthews got reconstructive surgery to look like the gigachad meme.' Another added, 'You won't believe how much he spent just to look [like] this.'

But the post carried an '#ad' tag, and an X Community Note attached to it stated, 'The post uses AI-generated images falsely depicting Clay Matthews after cosmetic work. No credible sources report any such change.'

The Community Note is user-contributed platform context, not independent forensic authentication, so it does not definitively prove the images are AI-generated. It is, however, a substantial reason to treat the surgery claim as unverified at best.

Recent public appearances also complicate the narrative. Matthews appeared on The Ryen Russillo Show on 3 September, discussing his Netflix role and the upcoming Rams–49ers game in Australia, and appeared without the dramatic facial changes depicted in the viral images.

He also featured on Bussin' With The Boys the same day alongside Will Compton, Taylor Lewan and Delanie Walker, talking through the 2026 NFL season.

Those recordings, alongside the Community Note and the '#ad' label, leave open the possibility that the images were created or used for promotional purposes, although neither TMZ nor Matthews has publicly explained what the advertisement was promoting.

Netflix Role and Recent Public Appearances

Matthews is returning to the NFL spotlight this season as part of Netflix's studio coverage for the league's first-ever regular-season game in Australia, the 49ers v Rams game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 10 September.

He joins Michael Irvin and Nick Foles on the studio team, with Elle Duncan hosting pregame, halftime and postgame segments.
