Epstein Files Include Melania Trump Emails With Maxwell Arranging New York City Meet-Up
Epstein files reveal Melania Trump and Ghislaine Maxwell's friendly emails

The Department of Justice has released a massive cache of documents that reveal the once-friendly dynamic between Melania Trump and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. The file dump, which occurred on Friday, 30 January, comprises nearly three million pages of records related to the government's investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. Buried within this mountain of evidence is a casual email exchange from late 2002 that exposes a surprisingly warm rapport between the future First Lady and Maxwell.
These messages take us back to when both women were staples of the New York social scene. They swapped pet names and tried to squeeze in meetups around their busy travel schedules. While the relationship between their partners would eventually disintegrate into a public falling out, these records confirm that Melania and Maxwell maintained a cordial, personal connection during the early years of the Trump–Epstein association.
The 'Sweet Pea' Moniker in Private Emails
The emails in question date back to 23 October 2002, three years before Melania Knauss would marry Donald Trump. In the exchange, Melania addresses Maxwell familiarly as 'G', while Maxwell responds by calling the former model 'sweet pea'. The vibe is surprisingly light and chatty, feeling completely removed from the dark reality and serious crimes that eventually became Maxwell's legacy. Melania initiated the contact, expressing a desire to reconnect with Maxwell upon her return to the city. 'I cannot wait to go down. Give me a call when you are back in NY', Melania wrote, signing off with, 'Have a great time! Love, Melania'.
Maxwell's reply, while apologetic, maintained the affectionate tone. 'Sweet pea – thanks for your message', Maxwell wrote back. She explained that her schedule had shifted, preventing a meetup. 'Actually, plans changed again, and I am now on my way back to NY. I leave again on Fri so I still do not think I have time to see you sadly. I will try and call though'.

Melania Praised Article Where Trump Discussed Women
One of the most striking elements of the correspondence is Melania's reference to a specific media profile of Jeffrey Epstein. In her note, she complimented Maxwell on a recent feature, writing, 'Nice story about JE in NY mag. You look great on the picture'. The article she referenced has since become infamous for its portrayal of Epstein and the quotes it contained. It was in this very profile that Donald Trump made his now-notorious comment regarding Epstein's preferences. 'I've known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy', Trump was quoted as saying in the piece. He went on to add that Epstein liked 'beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side'. Melania's praise for the story suggests she read the profile and found no issue with the coverage at the time.
Socialising Before High-Profile Fallout
The timing of these emails aligns with a period when the Trump and Epstein circles overlapped significantly. In the early 2000s, Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were widely considered friends, frequently attending the same social functions in Manhattan and Palm Beach. The email alludes to this cross-coastal lifestyle, with Melania asking, 'How was Palm Beach?' and acknowledging Maxwell's busy travel schedule.
Visual evidence from this era supports the camaraderie implied in the emails. Just a month after this exchange, in November 2002, a photograph was taken at a Dolce & Gabbana store opening in New York. The image features a quartet of 2000s celebrities: Donald Trump, Melania Knauss, Ghislaine Maxwell, and supermodel Naomi Campbell, all posing together. This public appearance occurred shortly before the relationship between the two powerful men reportedly soured.

Rumours During the Presidency
The document release also contains information from a much later period, long after the friendship had dissolved. In 2017, during the first year of the Trump administration, Epstein was exchanging emails with author Michael Wolff. These messages suggest that Epstein was still gathering gossip regarding the First Family, specifically targeting Melania's personal life. In a message dated 2017, Epstein hinted at scandalous rumours circulating in media circles. 'Some journalists working a lead on a Melania boyfriend', Epstein wrote to Wolff. This brief sentence implies that even whilst under scrutiny himself, Epstein remained focused on digging up potential dirt on his former associates.
