Evander as MLS All-Star Captain: What Makes Him Perfect for the Role
Evander silences early doubts, earns captaincy at the 2025 MLS All-Star Game and rewrites records

'Evander MLS' has been a standout phrase in the 2025 season, and now it holds even more weight. On Wednesday night, the Brazilian midfielder captained the MLS All-Star Team in Austin, becoming the third consecutive FC Cincinnati player to wear the armband in the annual fixture.
The honour, awarded via a fan vote, reflects more than just Evander's skill. It's the culmination of a remarkable turnaround, both for the player and the club that brought him in during a contentious January transfer window.
From Controversial Trade to Captaincy
When FC Cincinnati moved for Evander earlier this year, eyebrows were raised. The club parted ways with fan-favourite Luciano Acosta in what appeared to be a high-stakes exchange. Evander, meanwhile, had grown frustrated in Portland, and his relationship with Timbers management had soured. Public disputes with Portland's general manager and coach followed their 2024 playoff loss. Evander openly blamed leadership for the defeat.
Despite that tension, FC Cincinnati committed $12 million to secure Evander's services. This is an MLS record in cash trade value. The decision was bold, but six months later, it looks like a masterstroke.
Evander's 23 goal contributions is the third in the league. He contributed 15 goals and eight assists that helped propel Cincinnati to the top of the Supporters' Shield standings with 48 points. His impact has been immediate and consistent. He scored in five straight matches at one point and matched a club record for multi-goal games.

A Star On and Off the Ball
Evander's MLS All-Star captaincy isn't just ceremonial. He demonstrated his flair and confidence in the All-Star Skills Challenge, breaking the event's shooting challenge record with 72 points. That's seven more than the previous best. His performance also helped MLS secure a 4-2 win over Liga MX in the pre-game competitions.
Evander participated in three events and claimed victory in two. This showcased both sharp accuracy and creativity. His cheeky 'rabona' attempt and moving target hit drew cheers. This also showed that Evander is as much an entertainer as he is an athlete.
'Just playing and just enjoying the moment', he told Apple TV during the broadcast. His ability to deliver under pressure while keeping things light is likely what has won over teammates and fans alike.
Earning Respect in the Locker Room
Beyond the highlights, Evander has quickly grown into a leader. In a video provided by FC Cincinnati, he praised teammate Miles Robinson, who joined him in representing the club at the All-Star events. 'When more people from Cincinnati are here, the better it is', Evander said.
That camaraderie is matched by his drive. Even with his transfer finalised just two days before the season began, Evander adapted quickly to new teammates like Kevin Denkey and Luca Orellano. Though the offence struggled early, it can be seen that it has since found rhythm, helped by summer training gaps and Evander's influence on and off the ball.
His knack for long-range finishes has also added to his résumé. Evander currently leads the league in goals from outside the box and free kicks, giving FCC a new offensive weapon from distance.

Captain, Competitor, Catalyst
Now 27, Evander has become more than a player. He is a captain, a playmaker and a pivotal figure in a squad pushing for silverware. His arrival, once viewed with scepticism, now looks like a foundation for FC Cincinnati's future.
'Pretty happy to be here among all the best players in the league', Evander said ahead of the All-Star Game. 'It means that the job has been doing well'.
As the season continues, Evander remains a key reason why FC Cincinnati leads the league, and why fans across North America are keeping their eyes on him.
