Amal Clooney gave her husband George a very unusual gift for his birthday. The human rights lawyer bought the actor a new lawn mower to celebrate his turning 55.

"We have a beautiful front lawn at our house in England and I used to mow lawns when I was a kid," the Ocean's Eleven actor told ET Canada while at the Cannes Film Festival, promoting his latest movie Monster Money.

"So she bought me this giant riding lawnmower that is sitting at the house right now and I'm very excited about putting that to work when I'm home."

When asked how he celebrated his birthday, Clooney joked about how he spent it in the Bahamas, "crying and drinking". He later mentioned that in fact he had a wonderful time. "I was in the Bahamas with my wife and a couple of friends, and took a little boat ride, and went to a restaurant, and had a great night," he said.

During the interview which he did alongside his co-star Julia Roberts, he also spoke about marriage being one of the biggest risks he has ever taken. "I'm coming up on my second — and they said it wouldn't last," he quipped.

Clooney recently made a guest appearance with Roberts on James Corden's Carpool Karaoke. Also in the front seat was Gwen Stefani and the four spent their drive time crooning along to Stefani's 2006 hit Hollaback Girl, followed by Queen's anthem We Are The Champions.

He gave a taste of his dry humour while making a fuss about having to find his way back home now that Corden had reached work.

Monster Money released in cinemas across the US on 13 May.
