X-Files star Gillian Anderson has told fans that she would love to be a Ghostbuster in the upcoming women-led reboot.

The film was confirmed to be directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) who revealed last week through a tweet that Katie Dippold would be writing the script with him, having worked together on Feig's last film, The Heat.

Anderson's comments came as part of a Reddit Ask Me Anything session in which she also teased the existence of a third X-Files movie.

Asked about the reboot, Anderson's exact words were: "OH MY GOD, I just looked it up online. Paul Feig, cast me now! Start a Twitter petition! I'm free!!!!! I'm free I'm free and I'm funny, goddamnit!"

That's enthusiasm you can't fake!

On the X-Files movie she was less enthusiastic and more mysterious, saying: "Uh....uh... uh... Sorta kinda. Keep your ears to the ground."

Her answer prompted lots of "I want to believe" and "The truth is out there" responses.

Clearly it's a film fans of the iconic 90s sci-fi series want and considering the ten year gap between the first two films, a third is still not out of the question.

As for Ghostbusters, why not? It would certainly be a casting decision more likely to please fans than if bookie's favourite Melissa McCarthy is cast.
