Gordon Ramsay, a British celebrity chef and a restaurateur, recently uploaded a video on his YouTube channel showing how to whip up a perfect "Green Papaya Salad". It is an unusual salad inspired by Ramsay's time spent in Thailand learning the local cuisine.

The fresh, tasty and healthy salad is apparently perfect for parties and big family meals, and aimed at people who love spicy food. The great colours in the salad make this a real treat for the eyes as well as the taste buds.

Ramsay tells us his recipe has a dual effect. It texturises the papaya and carrots to meld with lime juice, tomatoes and Thai chilies, bringing an amazing kick to the salad and great smell from the aromatic Thai basil. A sprinkling of dry roasted peanuts completes the picture for a dish that can be served alone or as a colorful side dish.

The ingredients:

  • ½ lb green papaya, peeled, seeded & shredded.
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled & shredded.
  • 1-3 Thai bird chilies (red or green), or to taste.
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed & peeled.
  • ½ tsp sea salt.
  • zest of ½ lime.
  • 2 tbsp palm sugar (or dark brown sugar).
  • 1 tomato, rough chopped.
  • 1 tbsp tamari (or soy or fish sauce).
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice.
  • ¼ cup mint leaves, chopped.
  • ¼ cup Thai basil leaves, chopped.
  • ¼ cup dry roasted peanuts, lightly crushed, chopped or whole.
  • ¼ cup mint leaves, chopped.
  • ¼ cup Thai basil leaves, chopped.
  • ¼ cup dry roasted peanuts, lightly crushed, chopped or whole.
