Greece Volleyball Player Suffers Devastating Injury and Gets Everybody Crying Inside the Arena

Greece's historic run at the 2026 CEV Women's European Volleyball Championship ended in painful fashion after Georgia-Loula Angelopoulou suffered a serious knee injury during the quarter-final against Serbia.

The 21-year-old was left screaming in agony after going down early in the second set, bringing play to a standstill as concerned teammates and opponents gathered around her. The distressing scene left the players visibly shaken, with some struggling to hold back tears as they watched Angelopoulou receive medical attention.

Even some fans in the stands could be seen crying as the seriousness of the incident became apparent. The atmosphere inside the arena quickly turned from competitive tension to concern as Angelopoulou was unable to get back on her feet.

Angelopoulou had already made an impact before the injury, contributing three points, including two aces, as Greece attempted to compete with one of Europe's strongest volleyball nations.

The incident overshadowed what was otherwise a landmark occasion for Greece. The national team had reached the European Championship quarter-finals for the first time in its history, only to see its breakthrough campaign interrupted by a devastating injury.

Angelopoulou Carried off on a Stretcher

A Rising Star in Greek Volleyball

Born in 2005, Angelopoulou has been progressing through Greece's national-team system for several years and her progress has been remarkable.

Her international career stretches back to the 2019 CEV U16/U17 European Championship, before appearances at the U17/U18 European Championship in 2020 and the U19/U20 European Championship in 2022. She also featured for Greece at EuroVolley 2023 before earning another senior-team opportunity at the 2026 tournament.

Listed at 179cm (5'10½"), Angelopoulou has played both as an outside spiker and opposite during her development. CEV records show her competing for GS Panionios Nea Smyrni in the 2025-26 season, while she was also listed with AO Markopoulo for the 2026-27 campaign.

Angelopoulou's performances at EuroVolley 2026 represented another significant step in that progression. The tournament gave the young Greek player an opportunity to perform on one of the biggest stages in European volleyball.

Now, Angelopoulou faces an uncertain period away from the court. Further medical assessment will determine the extent of the injury and the rehabilitation required.
