Rockstar North has confirmed that completing a single Grand Theft Auto VI playthrough will require roughly 80 hours, setting a significant new runtime record in the studio's celebrated history.

Studio co-head Rob Nelson verified the milestone following the release of an extended 27-minute preview special on Netflix, providing global audiences with their first official metric regarding the campaign length of the highly anticipated title.

Rockstar distributed the extended gameplay and cinematics showcase to selected creators and industry representatives.

Speaking to The New York Times, Nelson explained that his own eighty-hour play session back in February encompassed the core storyline along with several optional tasks designed with narrative ramifications.

A Substantial Scale Defining the New GTA 6 Playthrough

The eighty-hour benchmark represents a substantial increase in campaign duration when compared against previous entries in the franchise. Both Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V offered standard campaigns that took approximately 30 hours for the average player to complete.

By more than doubling those earlier figures, the studio is demanding a major time commitment from anyone hoping to see the final credits roll.

To recall the scope of earlier releases, Red Dead Redemption 2 was the developer's most ambitious narrative project, requiring around 60 hours to complete the tragic journey of Arthur Morgan and John Marston.

Nelson's eighty-hour session demonstrates that the upcoming title will surpass even that sprawling Western adventure in both length and narrative density.

Geographical expansion forms a major pillar of this increased runtime. Rockstar has confirmed that the new map is roughly three times the size of the territory in Red Dead Redemption 2, offering vast stretches of urban and rural terrain for players to navigate.

Traversing an environment of that scale will naturally prolong travel times, though the studio appears focused on populating the terrain with responsive world events rather than leaving it empty.

Narrative Ambition Shaping Every GTA 6 Playthrough

Much of the extended runtime stems from how secondary activities intertwine with the primary plotline. Nelson emphasised that his eighty hours included 'some optional goals with narrative ramifications', indicating that detours will carry tangible consequences for the central plot.

Instead of arbitrary checklist tasks that exist purely for completion statistics, these optional objectives appear engineered to influence character dynamics, mission paths, and broader world states.

How many alternative branches exist remains an intriguing question, though the structure promises immense replay value for those eager to experience every possible outcome.

For completionists pursuing full mastery of the game, an eighty-hour baseline means total completion will easily stretch into triple digits.

The prospect of committing roughly three and a third continuous days just to reach the credits suggests that full 100 per cent progression, discovering every hidden encounter and exploring every corner of the three-fold expanded map, could easily take hundreds of hours.

Sprawling Activities Throughout the GTA 6 Setting

Beyond the scripted narrative, Rockstar is reintroducing long-missed mechanics that allow players to immerse themselves in character maintenance.

Gyms will return for the first time since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, allowing players to alter their physical attributes, stamina, and appearance through dedicated training routines across the open world.

A diverse selection of recreational pastimes will further distract players from progressing the central campaign too quickly. The preview footage confirmed the inclusion of professional track racing, underground dirt bike circuits, deep-sea scuba diving expeditions, backyard wrestling bouts, and high-altitude skydiving jumps.

Each diversion introduces unique gameplay loops that could easily absorb dozens of hours without touching the main story.

With the sheer volume of optional side quests, diverse mini-games, and a vastly expanded map awaiting exploration, players will likely see their total playtime balloon well past the eighty-hour benchmark once the game officially arrives.
