Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is moving towards a thumping victory as vote counting progresses in the world's largest democracy.

The Hindu nationalist party is on course to winning a simple majority of more than 272 seats in the 543-member lower house of parliament.

The ruling Congress party is bracing for the worst election result ever as they are leading in less than 60 seats.

Modi, who won from both the constituencies he was contesting from -- Vadodara and Varanasi -- is celebrated as the major reason behind the surprisingly strong result.

BJP has so far won, or leading in 275 seats while their alliance NDA is ahead in 324 seats.

Modi addressed people through Twitter, saying 'Good days are ahead'. The future prime minister also sought the blessings of his mother.

India has won! भारत की विजय। अच्छे दिन आने वाले हैं।

Meanwhile, social networking site Twitter has been swamped by funnier tweets about BJP and Modi's win and Rahul Gandhi's ultimate election campaign failure for the Congress party.

Gandhi is leading in his Amethi seat with 5,000 votes, having faced a tough battle from BJP's Smriti Irani. Here are some of the hilarious tweets.
