Thousands of people in China out and about shopping. But whilst this might look like any other mall, it is in fact the world's largest duty-free store.

Opening in the Chinese city of Sanya, the three-storey building is made up of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues – all exempt from local taxes.

Sanya lies in China's Hainan Province, and in recent times the Chinese government has increased efforts to promote the island as an international tourism destination.

According to Hainan's finance department, duty-free sales in the province exceeded 8 billion yuan, about £700m, between April 2011 and August this year. With the opening of this new 70,000 square metre shopping centre, that looks set to increase in the years to come.
