Wheel of Fortune Announcer Jim Thornton Says Suicide-Prevention Search Took Him to Pedophilia Chatroom

Former Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton says he entered a chatroom focused on people experiencing pedophilic thoughts after believing he had been directed to a suicide-prevention support service. The 61-year-old was photographed using a laptop aboard an American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles on May 14, with the website visible on his screen, prompting a passenger to alert the crew and authorities.

The incident has since cost Thornton his role on Wheel of Fortune. Sony Pictures Television initially suspended him after the allegations emerged, before terminating his employment effective immediately following an investigation.

Thornton has not been arrested or charged with a crime in connection with the incident.

Photographs published in reports appear to show Thornton using his laptop during American Airlines Flight 1276, while a chatroom that describes itself as offering support to people experiencing pedophilic thoughts was visible on the screen.

Disturbing Groupchat Seen by Passenger

Messages visible in the photographs reportedly contained sexualised references to children and references to 'CP', which the passenger who took the pictures believed meant child pornography. The photographs, however, do not establish that Thornton wrote those messages, participated in the conversation, or viewed or downloaded illegal material.

Thornton was not charged after law enforcement met the aircraft at Los Angeles International Airport, and there has been no public finding that he committed a crime.

The passenger who photographed the screen told TMZ that she became alarmed by what she saw and brought the images to a flight attendant. The captain was notified, and authorities met Thornton after the flight landed.

American Airlines confirmed that Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement after a passenger reported a concern. Thornton was questioned and released.

The photographs have nevertheless raised questions because timestamps visible in them appear to show the website open on his laptop for at least 57 minutes. That timeframe does not establish that Thornton was continuously reading the discussion or interacting with anyone on the site, but it has become an important point in the dispute over how he ended up there.

Thornton's attorney, Allison Hart, has offered an explanation for the incident. She said Thornton became involved in suicide-prevention advocacy after a close relative died by suicide and had previously used the official 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and its online chat service.

According to Hart, someone in Thornton's suicide-prevention community directed him to lifeline.chat. Thornton allegedly believed it was another form of suicide-prevention support similar to 988lifeline.org.

Instead, Hart said, the website described itself as a mental-health support service for people experiencing pedophilic thoughts.

'When my client understood what the website was about, he left the page and has not visited since,' Hart said.

She also maintained that the website itself is not illegal, contains no unlawful child sexual abuse material, and that Thornton never viewed or downloaded such material.

Those claims have not been independently established in the reporting. At the same time, the published photographs alone do not establish the opposing conclusion either.

Why Jim Thornton Was Removed From Wheel of Fortune

The professional consequences have moved faster than any criminal case. Sony Pictures Television first announced that Thornton had been suspended and that the programme was recasting while an investigation was conducted.

The company subsequently terminated his employment, effective immediately, after what it described as a thorough investigation.

The change creates a production headache for Wheel of Fortune, where Thornton had been a familiar voice since 2011. He took over as the show's full-time announcer following the death of Charlie O'Donnell and remained in the role through Pat Sajak's retirement and Ryan Seacrest's arrival alongside Vanna White.

He also announced Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.

The programme's upcoming 44th season had already been recorded in part before its September 14 premiere. Reports said producers were re-editing the episodes with another announcer, with the process described as a substantial undertaking.

For Thornton, the allegations therefore have already produced a decisive professional consequence despite the absence of criminal charges.

The photographs show what was visible on his laptop, but they do not by themselves establish who authored the messages or what Thornton knew about the site.

Law enforcement has not publicly provided a detailed account of its encounter with Thornton beyond confirming that authorities met the flight after the passenger's concern was reported and that he was released without being charged.
