Police are looking for a man who was apparently stabbed multiple times after he attempted to grope a female jogger.

The incident happened at a neighbourhood in the south of Salt Lake City at 6am yesterday (14 November).

The assailant came up behind the jogger and attempted to sexually assault her as she embarked on her morning run. The woman, who was carrying a small knife, stabbed the attacker and chased after him as he fled in the direction of a nearby bus stop.

"She gave chase for a little bit, and then decided to go back home and make the report to police," Salt Lake City police spokesperson Greg Wilking said.

Police are examining the blade for the attacker's DNA and said the woman regularly carries a knife for self-defence when she goes running.

The woman has described her attacker as five feet and nine inches tall and said he was aged around 15-to-30 years old. He has also been described as "physically fit" and was wearing a grey sweater and backpack.

Police have asked locals to keep a lookout for suspects with puncture wounds who fit the description. Anyone who has experienced similar assaults should come forward, they said.

"We certainly don't want to have another incident like this, and we would like to get this person identified and off the street," Wilking said to the Salt Lake Tribune.
