A Jordanian gunman has shot dead two American officials and a South African man at a police training centre on the outskirts of the country's capital Amman before turning the gun on himself, according to local reports.

The man, allegedly a police officer, also wounded two American trainers and four Jordanians, one critically, before taking his life at the Muaqar facility, Reuters reported. The facility is a US-funded training centre for Iraqi and Palestinian security forces.

The incident happened on the 10th anniversary of the Amman bombings, a series of attacks carried out by jihadists of al-Qaeda in Iraq on three hotel lobbies that killed 60 people and injured 115 others.

The Pentagon said it was investigating the deadly shooting.
