From Josh to Joseph — Duggar Brothers Face Child Sex Crime Charges as Family Brand Faces Renewed Scrutiny
Parents Jim Bob and Michelle reportedly 'admitted they knew' about the alleged abuse and chose church counselling over police

Former 19 Kids and Counting star Joseph Garrett Duggar, 31, has been arrested and charged with molesting a child under 12 during a 2020 family holiday in Florida. He is the second Duggar brother to face child sex crime charges. His parents, Jim Bob and Michelle, reportedly 'admitted they knew' about the alleged incidents.
What Joseph Duggar Is Accused Of
The Bay County Sheriff's Office announced on 18 March that a Tontitown, Arkansas, detective had reported allegations of past sexual abuse involving Duggar. A girl, now 14, told investigators in a forensic interview that Duggar had repeatedly abused her during a family trip to Panama City Beach in 2020 when she was nine years old.
The victim said Duggar asked her multiple times to sit on his lap during the holiday. He later sat her beside him on a couch, placed a blanket over them, and allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with the child, the sheriff's office said.
The case broke open after the victim's father confronted Duggar on 17 March 2026. Duggar confessed to both the father and the Tontitown police, the sheriff's office said. He was arrested the next day on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12, and lewd and lascivious behaviour by a person 18 or older. He is awaiting extradition to Bay County.
The Josh Duggar Parallel
Joseph's arrest is not the first time sex crime charges have reached the Duggar household. A 2006 police report, made public in 2015, revealed that his older brother Josh had been accused of molesting four of his sisters and a babysitter between 2000 and 2004, when Josh was between the ages of 12 and 16. The family chose internal church counselling over reporting it to authorities.
Josh was arrested in April 2021 on federal charges of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). He was convicted that December and sentenced to 12 and a half years in federal prison. He is serving his sentence at FCI Seagoville in Texas, with an earliest projected release in late 2032.
What the Parents Reportedly Knew
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar 'admitted they knew of the incidents' involving Joseph and are facing questions over their failure to report the allegations. The couple reportedly opted for internal church counselling instead.
If true, this would mark the second time the Duggar parents were aware of alleged child sexual abuse within their family and chose not to contact police. In the Josh case, Jim Bob acknowledged his eldest son had confessed to abusing young girls. The family sent Josh to a faith-based programme rather than law enforcement.
Joseph married Kendra Caldwell in September 2017, and the couple has four young children. Kendra has not issued any statement since the arrest. No member of the Duggar family has commented publicly.
Two Sons, One Broken Brand
The Duggars rose to fame through their TLC programme 19 Kids and Counting, which ran from 2008 to 2015 and presented the large, conservative Christian family from Tontitown, Arkansas as a model of wholesome living. TLC cancelled the programme after Josh's abuse allegations became public. A spinoff, Counting On, was pulled after his 2021 arrest.
Jim Bob Duggar, a former Arkansas state legislator, built a media and property business around the family's reputation. That image drove book deals, speaking tours, and political activism.
With a second son now charged and fresh reports that the parents once again knew of alleged abuse and did not act, the Duggar name carries a very different meaning. The Bay County Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing. No court date has been set.
