LeBron James to the Mavericks? NBA Trade Rumours, Contract Clues and What It Would Mean for Luka
The Mavericks have emerged as a serious contender for LeBron James

NBA All-time leading scorer LeBron James may have committed to another season with the Lakers, but trade speculation is far from over. The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly one of four teams that have reached out to the Lakers about a potential deal, adding fuel to what could become the most high-profile NBA storyline of the summer.
LeBron James Contract Status and What It Signals
On 29 June 2025, LeBron James officially opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 season, tying him to the Los Angeles Lakers for a 23rd NBA campaign. While that move appeared to signal loyalty to the franchise, insiders believe the situation remains fluid.
Despite opting in, no extension offer has been made by the Lakers to keep James beyond this upcoming season. According to NBA insider Brandon 'Scoop B' Robinson, James' agent, Rich Paul, confirmed that at least four teams have expressed interest in acquiring the veteran forward via trade. Those teams reportedly include the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, LA Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks.

Though James does not hold a formal no-trade clause, his stature and influence make it highly unlikely that a deal would be done without his blessing.
Could the Mavericks Really Land LeBron James?
Among the teams rumoured to be pursuing James, the Dallas Mavericks have emerged as potential frontrunners. Online sportsbook Bovada has placed the Mavericks at the top of the odds board, fuelling speculation of a possible blockbuster deal.
Analysts suggest that Dallas, fresh off an early exit in the 2024-2025 season, is looking to capitalise on its championship window, now with Cooper Flagg and hopefully a healthy Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis. Adding LeBron James could provide the experience and leadership needed to take the team over the top.
If a trade were to materialise, the Mavericks would likely need to part ways with young assets or draft capital, though specific names have not yet surfaced in reports.
How a LeBron James and Luka Dončić Split Could Impact the Lakers
James and Dončić are currently teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers, forming one of the most skilled duos in the NBA. Their partnership, built on high basketball IQ and offensive creativity, has redefined the Lakers' on-court identity.
James has long praised Dončić, calling him 'a generational talent' and noting the similarities in their all-around play. Together, they have offered the Lakers a rare blend of experience and youthful dominance.
However, if James were to be traded to Dončić's former team — the Dallas Mavericks, such a move would leave Dončić as the lone superstar in Los Angeles while James reunites with Kyrie and AD.
The potential split would significantly reshape both franchises. The Lakers would be tasked with reconfiguring their offence around Dončić alone, while the Mavericks could reunite with their former star in what could be a strategic power play in the Western Conference.
Will LeBron James Really Leave the Lakers?
Despite the buzz, some analysts remain sceptical about a LeBron James trade. Many believe the Lakers and James are preparing for a grand farewell season, with the potential for celebrations in every NBA arena. Others argue that the franchise may seek a reset if it becomes clear that a championship is out of reach.
For now, although growing noise around the Mavericks cannot be ignored, James has not requested a trade, so he remains a laker.
