Liverpool are considering a move to sign Derby County midfielder Will Hughes in the January transfer window, according to the Express.

The report claims the Reds were keen to add the youngster to their squad during the summer, but were unable to seal the deal. However, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has set his eyes in bringing Hughes to Anfield when the mid-season transfer window opens in early next year.

The former Swansea manager has urged Liverpool chief scout Barry Hunter to keep a close watch on Hughes before they return with another approach for the midfielder in January. The Reds may have to cough £10m in landing the English midfielder.

The Merseyside club are likely to face competition from Newcastle United, Arsenal and Manchester City for the England U21 international's signature. The Express claims Liverpool are likely to beat competition from the top flight Premier League clubs as they lead the race in signing the talented midfielder.

The 18-year-old is one of the promising stars of the Championship and his impressive form has seen him a place in England U21 squad. Derby were successful in keeping Hughes at the club as they were able to shrug off interest from the suitable buyers.

Earlier this summer, Derby manager Nigel Clough admitted that his side would consider an offer, if interested clubs make a suitable offer in signing Hughes. However, the Championship club are willing to let their star player leave as they value Hughes to over £6m.

"Nobody knows what we want or what the fee is going to be because we have not got a specific valuation in mind. Would it be more than £6million? Yes, I think it is fair to say that. We just think it is going to be a very, very substantial figure to tempt him away," Clough explained.

"If somebody comes in through the front door and makes an official enquiry or bid, we will have to react to it. But we are not in a situation where we have to do anything, which is lovely. There's obviously speculation about Will Hughes flying around but we have had no bids or contact from anyone. Nothing has changed," Derby manager said.
