A man has been hit by a Tube train at Stockwell in south London after he reportedly bent over the platform edge while reaching for a bag.

Witnesses called the collision "horrific" and British Transport Police later reported the man was in a critical condition at hospital.

Shaken commuters on the Northern line described what happened. "He got hit only metres from our carriage," Isabelle Zonderland told the Standard.

"When we were let off the Tube I saw him lying there. Someone who I believe was on the platform was checking for a pulse. His face was covered in blood."

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We treated a man reported to be in his twenties for head injuries and he was taken as a priority to Kings College Hospital."
