Paul Scholes claims United can still beat Arsenal to the title.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has claimed that his old club can still beat Arsenal to the title this season, insisting that January is when the contenders for the Premier League trophy will become apparent.

The Gunners have got off to a flying start this season, boasting only two losses as they go from strength to strength with star signing Mesut Ozil.

For United meanwhile, the campaign hasn't been so successful as David Moyes settles in at Old Trafford. The side fell to a disappointing 1-0 loss to Everton in their midweek fixture and now sit 12 points behind Arsenal in the table.

But speaking before the Everton game Scholes insisted that January is the time to be concerned over a side's position on the table and firmly believes that United can still catch Arsenal despite their difficult start to the season.

"Arsenal are obviously stronger than they've been in the past seven, eight years," Scholes told the Daily Mail. "I don't think they've had a start like this or a lead like this. Whether they can sustain that I'm really not too sure.

"Once you get to January time that's the time we get going and if we can stay in and around it I think we'll have a great chance of winning the league."

Arsenal and United have a long history of challenging one another at the top of the Premier League table and Scholes believes that this season will be no different, arguing that the Red Devils' win over their rivals proved they are still serious contenders.

He explained: "We beat Arsenal at Old Trafford not long ago. We set a marker there that we are still challenging.

"We've had our tussles with Arsenal over the years but we've got a big squad, a strong squad."
