Manchester United are reportedly preparing a massive £75m bid to seal a deal for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.

According to the Guardian, incoming United manager Louis van Gaal is an admirer of the Real Madrid winger and the Dutchman wants to bring the Argentine international to Old Trafford this summer.

The Spanish capital club are willing to part ways with Di Maria as their focus is on signing AS Monaco star James Rodriguez, who was the star player for Colombia in the World Cup. The arrival of the former Porto attacker could force the Argentine to leave Real this summer.

The Red Devils are ready to offer £40m for Di Maria's signature, but the Champions League winners value him highly. United believe an improved offer of £45m will convince Real to sell the 26-year-old.

Van Gaal is ready to offload last summer's major signing Marouane Fellaini in order to raise funds to sign Di Maria. The player is happy in Madrid, but has repeatedly stressed his future at Real remains uncertain.

United could face competition from their Premier League rivals Arsenal for Di Maria's signature as the Gunners are also interested in the winger's services. However, the north London club's priority is landing Alexis Sanchez as the forward is set to leave Barcelona in the ongoing transfer window.

Meanwhile, United are also looking to add a central defender to their squad after the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic last season.

Hummels has emerged as a top defender target as the Red Devils currently have Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans as the first choice centre-backs in the squad.

There is a feeling the German international is open to a summer switch if Dortmund agree to let their star man leave. Hummels is believed to be a fan of Van Gaal's principles and the presence of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager could see him join the Premier League club.

United are willing to offer a fee in the region of £25m-£30m to Dortmund for Hummels. They have already added Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw to their squad. Should they manage to land both Di Maria and the German centre-back, it will bolster their squad for the new season.
