Nadal maintained his consistent form in Miami winning all of his matches so far without dropping a single set. In his previous game, the world number one brushed Fabio Fobnini with ease, sending the Italian packing, 6-2, 6-2, needing only 62 minutes on Tuesday.
The Spaniard's next opponent is 12th seed Milos Raonic, who also enjoyed an easy route in to the quarterfinal. The Canadian overcame Benjamin Becker, 6-3, 6-4, in the fourth round with the game lasting nearly one-and-a-half hours.
Despite progressing to the finals in Miami on three previous occasions, Nadal has been unsuccessful in laying his hand on the trophy. However, the 27-year-old will be hoping to register another crushing victory against his opponent to progress into the semi-finals.
Whoever triumphs in this clash will vie against the winner of the game between 22nd seed, Alexandr Dolgopolov and seventh seed, Tomas Berdych for a place in the final.
Raonic has never managed to beat the Spaniard all of the previous meetings between the two and will be hoping to hand the world number one a shock exit from the tournament.
Nadal holds a 4-0 lead against Raonic in overall meetings. They have never faced each other in a Grand Slam event.
