49ers Star Mike Evans Admits He Didn't Recognise Trevon Diggs During Viral NFL Confrontation
The 49ers receiver said he genuinely did not know who was confronting him before recognising the Seahawks cornerback during San Francisco's 32-29 win

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans has admitted that he failed to recognise Seattle Seahawks cornerback Trevon Diggs during a heated on-field confrontation, explaining why he turned his opponent around to check his jersey.
The exchange occurred during San Francisco's 32-29 victory over Seattle at Lumen Field on Sunday, 11 October 2026. Evans later explained the incident in a post-game interview, revealing that he initially had no idea who was confronting him.
Mike Evans Explains Viral 'Who Are You?' Moment
The confrontation unfolded during the second quarter after Evans and Diggs became involved in a physical exchange following a play.
As Diggs continued talking, Evans grabbed the cornerback and turned him around to inspect the nameplate on his jersey. The moment attracted attention online, with viewers interpreting the gesture as an attempt to embarrass the former Dallas Cowboys star.
However, Evans offered a different explanation.
'I honestly didn't know it was him,' Evans told reporters, explaining that identifying opponents beneath their helmets can sometimes be difficult.
He recalled asking, 'Who are you?' before checking Diggs' jersey.

'Oh, it's f**king Diggs,' Evans remembered thinking once he recognised the defender. Evans explained that Diggs had accused him of doing too much while blocking during the play.
The confrontation escalated when Diggs responded by shoving Evans in the facemask. Evans believed the contact should have resulted in a penalty, although officials did not flag the incident.
Despite the exchange, Evans appeared amused while recounting what happened.
Trevon Diggs' NFL Reputation Adds Another Twist
The incident attracted attention because Diggs is an established NFL defensive back.
The 28-year-old cornerback previously built his reputation with Dallas, becoming one of the league's most productive defensive players. He led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021, earning first-team All-Pro recognition and consecutive Pro Bowl selections.
However, injuries and changes in his playing situation have complicated his career since those standout seasons. Diggs eventually joined Seattle following spells with Dallas and Green Bay, earning promotion from the Seahawks' practice squad before Sunday's game.
His background made Evans' apparent failure to recognise him particularly surprising.
However, Evans' explanation suggests the encounter began with genuine confusion rather than a calculated attempt to humiliate Diggs.
Evans Has the Last Laugh as 49ers Stay Unbeaten
Beyond the confrontation, Evans delivered another impressive performance for San Francisco. He recorded seven receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown, helping the 49ers secure their fifth consecutive victory.
Evans opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brock Purdy. He also caught a crucial two-point conversion during the fourth quarter as San Francisco battled to regain the lead.
Seattle eventually levelled the contest before kicker Eddy Piñeiro converted a 44-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining.
The Seahawks failed to respond, leaving San Francisco with a 32-29 victory and an unbeaten 5-0 record.
For Evans, the performance demonstrated his value to the 49ers' offence, while his confrontation with Diggs supplied one of the game's most memorable moments.
What appeared to be a deliberate insult, according to Evans, was simply a case of not recognising an old opponent.
