A sheriff in Ohio has said there are "good days ahead" if the mother of all bombs can be used to fight Mexican drug cartels.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones took to social media to share his opinion on the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB), which was used for the first time on Thursday (13 April) by the US in Afghanistan to fight Isis.

Jones wrote on Twitter: "I have been saying this for 10 years. Enough is enough. This Moab can be used on Mexican drug cartel. These are good days ahead."

He had also used the social media site to comment on the first use of the bomb on Thursday: "The USA is back."

The airstrike reportedly resulted in the deaths of 36 members of Isis — a claim denied by the Islamist group — with US Commander John Nicholson claiming there were no civilian casualties.

"This was the right weapon against the right target," Nicholson said.

He added: "We had persistent surveillance over the area before and during after the operation and now we have Afghan and US forces on the site and see no evidence of civilian casualties, nor are there any reports of civilian casualties."

But Isis claimed that no insurgents were killed in the airstrike. Instead, it suggested that there had been a number of non-combatant casualties.

The bomb – the largest non-nuclear bomb to be used in combat history – is highly unlikely ever to be used to fight drug cartels.
