Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home in the early hours of 1 February, and now investigators say DNA tests on a glove found nearby on 15 February show it belonged to a local restaurant worker who has no connection to the missing 84-year-old or her disappearance.

The news came after detectives had briefly treated the single glove, discovered about two miles from Guthrie's residence, as one of the most promising pieces of physical evidence in the case. The item appeared similar to gloves worn by a masked and armed man seen on security footage at Guthrie's home, raising hopes that it might put a name, or at least a profile, to the shadowy figure caught on camera.

DNA Result Undercuts Hopes Of Break In Nancy Guthrie Case

The glove was found during the wide search that followed Guthrie's disappearance from her Tucson property in Pima County, Arizona. Deputies and federal agents have spent weeks combing the surrounding desert and suburban streets, following up tips and reviewing hours of video after Nest doorbell footage released on 10 February showed an unidentified intruder on her property.

At first glance, the glove seemed to sit neatly within that emerging picture. According to reporting by PEOPLE magazine, its design was similar to what the masked man appeared to be wearing in the home surveillance footage. In a case with no confirmed suspect and no clear crime scene beyond a bloodstained front porch, it looked, briefly, like a lifeline.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has now publicly ruled that out. Speaking to local station KVOA, he said DNA analysis linked the glove to a person working at a restaurant near where it was discovered.

'We knew that at that time, we believed wholeheartedly that those gloves belonged to a restaurant and guess what? The owner of the glove, we found working at a restaurant across the street,' Nanos said. 'It has nothing to do with the case.'

The Pima County Sheriff's Department reinforced that on 4 March in a statement on X, confirming that the individual identified through the DNA match 'is not part of this investigation.' That shuts down what had looked like a potentially direct route to the suspect and forces detectives back to a broader, less tidy mix of digital clues, laboratory work and public appeals.

Other Gloves, Mixed DNA And A Vanishing Trail

Investigators have not run out of forensic material, but what remains is harder to interpret. Sheriff Nanos said other gloves are still undergoing testing at a laboratory in Florida. Those items, which have not been described in detail, are producing what he called mixed DNA profiles.

'It's a challenge because we know we have DNA, but now we have to deal with that mixture and how we're going to separate it,' he told KVOA.

Mixed samples can include genetic material from more than one person, sometimes layered through contact, contamination or simple everyday use. In practical terms, it means the science is moving more slowly than the urgency of the case, and any clear answer about whether those gloves belong to the masked assailant, an innocent passer-by or someone else entirely is still some way off.

None of the agencies involved have suggested that the glove tests have produced a viable suspect. Until there is a confirmed match or a formal announcement pointing in that direction, nothing on that front is settled and any speculation about whose DNA is on the remaining items has to be taken with a grain of salt.

What investigators do say they have is a clearer understanding of what happened around Guthrie's home in the crucial early-morning window when she disappeared.

Timeline Tightens Around Last Known Moments Of Nancy Guthrie

Working with the FBI, the Pima County Sheriff's Department has pieced together a technical timeline from Guthrie's own devices and home security systems.

According to that timeline, her doorbell camera was disconnected at 1.47 a.m. on 1 February. Roughly 25 minutes later, at 2.12 a.m., a dark figure was detected walking towards the house. By 2.28 a.m., Guthrie's pacemaker disconnected from the mobile phone app it was paired with, suggesting a sudden change in her circumstances or location.

Separately, officials have confirmed that blood spatter found on Guthrie's front porch belongs to her. Combined with the Nest camera footage released on 10 February, which shows a masked assailant at the home, the picture that emerges is of an elderly woman confronted and removed from her property in a narrow half-hour window while most of her neighbours slept.

The FBI has provided a working description of the suspect seen on video. He is described as a man between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build, carrying a black 25-litre Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. That is as far as the public description goes; there has been no release of facial imagery, licence plate information or any suggestion that the suspect has been named.

For a case that has gripped local residents and drawn national attention, that level of vagueness is both understandable and quietly frustrating.

Rewards Mount As Family Of Nancy Guthrie Plead For Answers

While the science edges forward, Guthrie's family and federal agents are leaning heavily on the public. Relatives have put up to 1 million dollars on the table for information leading to her recovery, according to the current reward notice. Alongside that, the FBI has posted its own reward of 100,000 dollars.

The sums reflect both the family's resources and their increasing anxiety. Money of that scale is also meant to break through hesitation among anyone who might know or suspect something but has so far stayed silent.

So far there has been no announcement of a decisive tip or a person of interest emerging from that appeal. The cleared glove owner underlines another uncomfortable truth of this investigation: a case can generate evidence, headlines and even a detailed technical timeline, and still leave the central question unanswered.
