Overview

World number one Novak Djokovic has returned to winning ways after being shocked by Jiri Vesely in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters in April. The Serb has looked in fine touch so far, thrashing Milos Raonic 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-final in a match that lasted an hour and 44 minutes.

Djokovic, who is making an appearance in the semi-final of the Madrid Open for the first time since 2011, is the man to beat and the way he has been playing so far it is difficult to predict if anyone can prevent him from securing what will be his second Madrid Open title.

World number six Nishikori has impressed everyone not only with his physical game but also with his composure on the court and calmness under pressure. This trait was evident when he took on Nick Krygios in what was one of the best matches seen this year.

The two rising stars put on a show for two hours and 38 minutes, with Nishikori eventually winning 6-7(6), 7-6(1), 6-3 to progress to the semi-final. The Japanese-born player has beaten Djokovic in the past, most memorably in the semi-final of the US Open in 2014 but a repeat here looks unlikely.
