Overview

World number one Novak Djokovic stuttered against Mischa Zverev in the quarter-final on Friday (14 October), looking shaky but eventually got the job done as he beat the Russian 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 to progress into the semi-final.

The defending Shanghai Masters champion is known to put on some unimpressive performances only to raise his game at the later stages, but here he looked vulnerable losing the first set while also falling behind 0-2 in the second. However, Zverev could not take advantage of such a slip, which eventually gave the current world number one a lifeline.

Djokovic is the favourite to progress to the final but if he puts on another performance like the one against Zverev he might just find himself in trouble.

Roberto Bautista Agut on the other hand comes into this clash full of confidence after cruising past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4 on Friday. The Spaniard has had a good season so far winning titles in Auckland, Sofia and Washington while also reaching the semi-finals of the St Petersburg Open and the quarters of 2016 Rio Olympics.

However, the 28-year-old has a very bad record when playing against the top 10 with a 5-30 win-loss record. Two of those wins came over Tomas Berdych, two over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and one over Juan Martin del Potro. It looks unlikely that Agut will better that record come 15 October.
