What Is the October Canon Event? TikTok's Viral Theory About Life-Changing Experiences
The October canon event theory is back on TikTok

October has arrived, and TikTok users are convinced something is about to go terribly wrong. From unexpected breakups and friendship fallouts to sudden life changes, the internet is warning everyone about the dreaded 'October canon event'.
The viral theory suggests this month has a habit of delivering experiences nobody asked for but everyone apparently needs for their 'character development'. And with Halloween still weeks away, some users are wondering whether they have survived theirs or if the worst is yet to come.
What Is the October Canon Event?
According to TikTok's October rulebook, everyone has a moment waiting to catch them off guard. It could be a breakup, a friendship ending over something ridiculous, an awkward confession or a decision that changes everything.
The joke is that these experiences are unavoidable. You might think October is going perfectly well, only for a message from an ex or an unexpected argument to send your plans sideways. Videos warning 'Don't think you dodged the October canon event' have become part of the trend, alongside users sharing the moment their month took a turn.

Some tell difficult stories. Others count minor disasters, like texting the wrong person or getting a haircut they immediately regret. Either way, the comments often fill with people comparing notes, as though October has personally picked a fight with them.
Spider-Man Inspired the Canon Event TikTok Trend
The phrase comes from the 2023 animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where Miguel O'Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, explains the idea of 'canon events'.
In the film, certain experiences are meant to happen across different Spider-Man universes. Many involve loss or painful turning points, and Miguel warns that interfering could have disastrous consequences. Miles Morales, however, isn't convinced that everyone should simply accept what supposedly has to happen.
TikTok took that dramatic idea and applied it to ordinary life. Suddenly, watching a friend return to a questionable ex became a 'canon event'. So did trying an unfortunate hairstyle or making an embarrassing first impression.
The accompanying joke, 'I can't interfere, it's a canon event', spread alongside clips using the film's ominous music. Merriam-Webster has since recognised 'canon event' as slang for a formative experience involving good fortune or hardship.
Why the October Canon Event Theory Keeps Returning
October gives the joke plenty to work with. University assignments are piling up, routines are changing, the weather is getting colder in many places and the end of the year is suddenly looking uncomfortably close. The October version circulated in 2024 and 2025, and users have continued treating the month like a season finale for their personal lives.
Of course, there is no established evidence that October produces more life-changing moments than other months. But that hardly stopped people from finding suspiciously perfect timing in an unexpected breakup or a dramatic group-chat argument.
Perhaps the appeal is simple: when life gets messy, calling it a canon event makes the story a little easier to tell. And if October passes without incident? There is still time for the internet to declare November the next chapter.
