'Papa, We Won't Survive': Teen's Final Message Before Deadly Uttarkashi Flash Flood

In the early hours of 5 August, a teenage boy sent a chilling message to his father from a remote Himalayan village in Uttarakhand: 'papa, we won't survive.' Within hours, he was missing, one of dozens unaccounted for after a devastating flash flood tore through the region.

The village of Dharali, located in Uttarkashi district, was left in ruins after a sudden cloudburst triggered landslides and floods, sweeping away homes and leaving entire families stranded or missing.

According to a report by News18, the teen's parents, who received his final message, are still waiting near the site for any word on their son.

What Happened in the Dead of Night

Rescue teams say the disaster was caused by a cloudburst high in the mountains above Kheerganga. It unleashed a sudden torrent of water, mud, rocks and debris. The wall of destruction surged down without warning, flooding low-lying areas and cutting off access to surrounding villages.

Many residents were fast asleep when the waters struck. Some had no chance to react. Others, like the boy who texted his father, managed only to grab their phones before the power went out and the valley was consumed.

When the Floods Hit

The flood hit shortly after 3am. No alerts were issued, no alarms rang out. The only warning was the deafening sound of water crashing down the valley.

Locals described the noise as louder than thunder. Moments later, homes were being torn apart. By sunrise, entire neighbourhoods were reduced to rubble, roads were blocked with debris, and several villages remained unreachable.

Where the Destruction Was Worst

Dharali, a once-serene village along the Gangotri pilgrimage route, took the brunt of the destruction. It is a location that usually welcomes waves of seasonal workers and religious visitors during this time of year. Now, it lies buried beneath mud and broken timber.

Its remote location has made rescue operations particularly difficult. Roads are destroyed, communication is unstable, and continued rainfall has further delayed emergency efforts.

Who the Missing and Dead Are

Among the missing are several Nepali labourers who had travelled to Uttarkashi for seasonal employment. The teenage boy who sent the message to his father was one of them. His parents shared the text with reporters and have been waiting in Dharali for days, hoping for word of their son's fate.

As of now, four deaths have been confirmed. More than 50 people are still missing. Survivors are being treated in temporary medical camps set up near the affected zones.
